One of his most memorable TV roles, and one of the most memorable on the series, was on the Love, American Style (1969) episode, Love, American Style: Love and the Phone Booth/Love and the Doorknob (1969), in which he plays a guy who is told his mouth is too small. To test it out, he accidentally wraps his mouth around a doorknob and gets stuck! His co-star in that episode was, none other than, his wife at the time, Stefanie Powers.

Got his name from legendary director Joshua Logan, whose middle name is Lockwood, because no one could pronounce Gary's real last name: Yurosek. A generation later his daughter actress Samantha Lockwood is best friends with actor Billy Lockwood, who is related to the very man who gave Gary his first job!.

While appearing in Star Trek: The Original Series (1966)'s second pilot episode, Star Trek: The Original Series: Where No Man Has Gone Before (1966), he was required to wear heavy silver contact lenses for his character. Lockwood had difficulty wearing the lenses as they were heavy, thick, and only had one tiny hole for him to see through. He claimed, afterward, that the lenses were to blame for his later vision problems.

Most famous for his role in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", Lockwood had, in fact, worked for Kubrick before, in an uncredited bit part in "Spartacus".

Will soon beat out the late Leonard Nimoy (as Spock) for playing the same character on Star Trek in (1966) and The J.J. Abrams (2009) re-boot, and the "in production", Star Trek Equinox: The Night of Time. Lockwood's character name was, Lt. Cmdr. Gary Mitchell (1966) and will be Fleet Captain Gary Mitchell when the film debut's. Oh, and that record was 47 years for Nimoy. Equinox: The Night of Time, has been in development for quite some time, and is filming as of (June 2018). If released in (2019), it would be a 53 year span. The movie will also have Lockwood's daughter, Samantha Lockwood as Nurse Christine Roddenberry, in honor of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Garret Wang, will also reprise, his role as Star Trek Voyager's, Harry Kim, now a Starfleet Captain.
