She did not intend becoming an actor but her father, Piers Haggard, asked her to read opposite actresses that he was auditioning for The Ruth Rendell Mysteries: Heartstones: Part One (1996). The producer, Neil Zeiger, said "I want to audition your daughter". She won the part, despite discouragement from her father who regarded acting as "a hard, horrible life".
